Remember those quizzes you had on the state capitals back in junior high? Oh, the pressure! The temptation to write "Pierre, Olympia, Dover, Albany" on the inside of your hand was overwhelming, wasn't it? But you resisted. Maybe Sarah Palin should have done the same.

The former vice presidential candidate seems to have been caught using curious crib notes during an interview this past weekend at the high-profile Tea Party Convention in Nashville. While speaking about her top political priorities, Ms. Palin gazed at her hand in a rather suspicious manner.

Later, Web researchers zoomed in on her left palm and found the following words scrawled in black ink: "Energy, Budget cuts (with "budget" crossed out), Tax, Lift American Spirits." In an ironic twist during the speech, Ms. Palin worked in a jab against President Obama's often-mocked use of TelePrompTers. You can watch the clip below or check out a close-up here.

Following the flap, the Web went wild. Andrea Mitchell of MSNBC mocked Ms. Palin by relying on her own crib notes to recap highlights from Palin's appearance. Her keynote speech, it should be noted, had the crowd on its feet. "Run, Sarah, run," the crowd chanted (as in "please run for president in 2012").

But palm-gate wasn't the only bit of news sparked by Palin. Her defense of Rush Limbaugh's use of the word "retards" raised eyebrows, as well. On Fox News Sunday, the anti "r-word" crusader contended that Limbaugh had used the word in the context of political humor and satire. Earlier in the week, the difference between her angry reaction to White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel's use of the "slur" and a more restrained response to Limbaugh's made from some awkward fallout. Web searches on "sarah palin on fox news" and "palin limbaugh" have both surged as the controversy swirled.

From I-JOBS to fewer roadway fatalities, the Iowa Department of Transportation considered 2009 a year of positives.

The Culver/Judge Administration's $830 million, three-year economic and flood recovery program known as I-JOBS, authorized $105 million for several investments concerning job creation and road repair.

During the 2009 legislative session, $3 million was allowed for capital improvements and related studies toward expanding passenger rail service in Iowa, the first modern-day passenger rail appropriation.

Five applications totaling $441 million to the Federal Railroad Administration were submitted.

Considered a record year for road construction, the Recovery Act helped Iowa place $1.03 billion toward state and local maintenance projects.

IDOT rehabilitated 841 miles of the state's primary highways, completing 30 miles of grading for expanded roadways and the rehabilitation of various bridges.

The state also received more than $400 million in transportation funding for airport improvements, other roads and bridges, multi-use trails, bus replacements and freight rails.

As of Dec. 30, 371 individuals died on Iowa roadways during the past year.

Approximately 20 percent of those fatalities resulted in crashes where the driver was impaired with drugs or alcohol. The 10-year average for deaths caused by impairment is almost 25 percent, with last year being the second consecutive at around 20 percent.

Fewer large commercial vehicles were involved in fatal crashes last year as well. Preliminary stats show numbers could be down as much as 20 percent compared to the 10-year average.

Roadway safety features such as high-tension cable barriers (that keep errant vehicles from crossing medians), paved shoulders, and rumble strips all played a part in fatality reduction.

The war of words between Jon Gosselin and Hailey Glassman continues following the trashing of an apartment they shared, with lawyers for both sides lashing out.

After Gosselin's lawyer boldly told RadarOnline Monday that Glassman was "going to jail, it's as simple as that," her lawyer, Stephanie Ovadia, fired back.

"For an attorney to go out there and say someone's going to jail when they're not even arrested – that's just irresponsible," Ovadia told People.com.

"That is the most ludicrous, ridiculous, unnecessary statement I have ever in my life heard."

Glassman admits she took items from the apartment, but only ones that belonged to her. She had been splitting rent on the W. 72nd St. pad with Gosselin and they were living there as a couple until they split several weeks ago.

Since then, Gosselin has fallen behind on the rent. Ovadia says he told Glassman "the apartment would be padlocked because he had not been paying rent, and she should go there and take whatever she wanted."

As for reports that Gosselin's bed, clothes, rug, and curtains were shredded and a note calling him a "cheater" was found stuck to his dresser with a butcher knife, Glassman's lawyer says "I don't believe there's anything to be concerned about. And I don't know of any notes. Again, I know nothing about any butcher knife. I can't even add to that nonsense."

Glassman's camp has implied the incident is a publicity stunt.

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly told the Daily News on Monday, "The investigation is going forward. I know there are some allegations about whether or not it was staged. The detectives are looking at this incident."

Gosselin's lawyer, Mark Heller, has denied that his client has anything to do with the break-in or is attempting to frame Glassman.

COPENHAGEN (www.nytimes.com) -- Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton has promised the United States will help raise $100 billion annually by 2020 to assist poor countries in coping with climate change as long as America's demands for a global warming pledge are met.
Clinton's announcement, made during a packed news conference, represents a major breakthrough in the U.N.-led talks, which had all but ground to a halt last night. But Clinton emphasized that the money is only on the table so long as fast-growing nations like China and India accept binding commitments that are open to international inspection and verification. If other countries don't bend, she warned, the poorest countries will suffer.

"In the absence of an operational agreement that meets the requirements that I outlined, there will not be that financial agreement, at least from the United States," Clinton warned. And, she added: "Without that accord, there won't be the kind of joint global action from all of the major economies we all want to see, and the effects in the developing world could be catastrophic."

The pledged amount is less than what the European Union had laid out as necessary to help the poorest countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America prepare for climate disasters and develop low-fossil-fuel economies. Clinton said the funding would come from a mix of public and private financing, including revenue raised from the auctioning of emission allowances under a possible U.S. cap-and-trade system still under development on Capitol Hill.

Clinton did not go into many other details, leaving it unclear precisely what the U.S. share of the $100 billion would be. U.N. climate chief Yvo de Boer said he is "looking keenly forward" to learning what that contribution will be.

De Boer and others said Clinton's announcement has helped get the lurching and sputtering train of international climate talks back on track.

After a long stall, some movement

"Hold tight and mind the doors. The cable car is moving again," a smiling de Boer said moments after Clinton's announcement.

Added Danish Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen, "There's a feeling among negotiators that now we have to go into business, and now we have to be flexible, and now we have to try as hard as we can to make real compromises."
U.S. environmental groups and House Democrats heaped praise on the announcement, while Republican staffers warned of the political difficulties back home in selling such a vast contribution as the economy reels.
"I think it's very essential to the success of how we go forward," House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) told E&E as she arrived at the Bella Center. "We'll see what the participation will be of other nations, what's certainly appropriate for us to play a leading role in it. So I salute her."

The 3D epic adventure by the director of 1997 blockbuster Titanic is one of the most expensive films ever at a cost of about $400 million to make and market. It begins its worldwide launch next week, hitting US theaters on Dec. 18.
If initial reviews and Twitter buzz are any indication, it may be money well spent for film studio 20th Century Fox.
"James Cameron has proven his point: He is king of the world," raved showbiz newspaper The Hollywood Reporter.
"As commander-in-chief of an army of visual-effects technicians, creature designers, motion-capture mavens, stunt performers, dancers, actors and music and sound magicians, he brings science-fiction movies into the 21st century with the jaw-dropping wonder that is Avatar," it said.
Britain’s biggest-selling tabloid, The Sun, called it "the most dazzling film of the decade... The final battle scene is 20 minutes long and absolutely mind-blowing."
Avatar shows the forest-dwelling Na’vi fighting for survival against a colonial mining operation bent on stripping their planet. A crippled ex-Marine is chosen to make contact with the mysterious people as a remotely controlled avatar.
Empire magazine gave the movie five stars out of five, calling it a "hugely rewarding experience" whose new technology "will give directors... one heck of a sandbox to play in."
Twitter lit up with comments from journalists leaving the tightly guarded premiere.
"James Cameron is a freakin’ genius! I can’t say much but wow, I loved it," wrote Alex Billington of the movie Web site FirstShowing.net.
The London Guardian’s Mark Brown wrote on Thursday that Avatar was "really much, much better than expected, [it] looked amazing and the story was gripping -- if cheesy in many places."

We all know what Jennifer Hudson can do, and she'll no doubt do just that in her first, hourlong television special, "Jennifer Hudson: I'll Be Home for Christmas," which airs Monday.

ABC didn't offer a preview of the special but did pass along three snippets: Hudson lip-syncing a gospeled-up "Silent Night," while seated (rather oddly) alone in the bow of a boat passing under Chicago River bridges; Hudson in personable, girl-next-door mode ushering the cameras into her high school, Dunbar Vocational Career Academy on the South Side, and Hudson singing "Oh Come, All Ye Faithful" a cappella in front of a fireplace with four other women whom she eventually blows out of the room.

ABC also promises that Hudson duets with Michael Buble on "Baby, It's Cold Outside" and "Let It Snow," and sings "The Christmas Song" and "O Holy Night" on the special, which marks her return to Chicago "to share childhood memories of the music, people and places that set the stage for her phenomenal success."

What's not mentioned is how or whether the special will address the tragic subtext of her hometown visit, which comes little more than a year after mother, brother and nephew were murdered in Englewood, allegedly by her sister's estranged husband. Hudson since has become engaged to former reality TV star David Otunga, given birth to a boy and made various high-profile appearances (the Super Bowl, "The Oprah Winfrey Show" on Michigan Avenue) while guarding her privacy regarding the turbulence of the last 14 months.

That's all within her rights, of course; she deserves as much space as she desires. But going home for the holidays is a loaded situation for most regular folks in a normal year, so one can only imagine the fierce undercurrents affecting Hudson as she chooses to venture "Home for Christmas" now in such a public way.

The 26-year-old Las Vegas cocktail waitress appeared on the Today show to scotch rumours that Woods paid her for sex.

She claimed that they had a "boyfriend-girlfriend relationship" which lasted 18 months. Woods publicly flaunted their affair and did not appear worried about getting caught, she claimed.

She told host Meredith Vieira: "I have nothing to do with prostitution and never have, never will. I just wanted to come on national TV to say that [the rumours] are not true."
"I got nothing from this relationship - except a broken heart."
Jungers met Woods in a club in early 2005 where she was working as a VIP hostess. They ended up "hanging out and drinking - pretty much what you do in a nightclub", she said. He invited her back to the MGM Grand where "the more we drank, the more flirtatious we got" and they ended up sleeping together that night, according to Jungers.
Expecting it to be a one-night stand, she was surprised when Woods called her the next day and gave her his phone number. She saw him when he came to Las Vegas and he once flew her to Los Angeles when his wife was out of town, she said.
Asked why Woods made no attempt to hide their relationship, Jungers said: "To be honest with you, I'm not really sure.
"We went places together, people were taking our photographs in the nightclubs. When I went to see him at the MGM, I would have to check in under my name and say that I was there to see him,a nd Tiger would come down and get me."

I don't typically watch Oprah. But I won't miss Monday's interview with Sarah Palin. The appearance is supposed to be about Ms. Palin's new memoir, but a lot more will be riding on the encounter than book sales.

After last year's brutal presidential campaign, Ms. Palin is now reintroducing herself to the American public. Nothing less than her future in American politics—and a possible run for the White House in 2012—hangs in the balance.

Ms. Palin has two problems. The first is that she's become one of the most polarizing figures in the country. The second is that voters continue to worry about her qualifications for the presidency, a concern that her abrupt resignation from office last July intensified.

Lucky for her, both problems are solvable. Since Ms. Palin appeared on the national stage, the left has unfairly demonized her. Blockbuster interviews and book tours will humanize her.

More important than these public appearances is Ms. Palin's message. She needs to adopt a market-friendly populist agenda to strengthen her policy credentials and make her seem less partisan to independent voters. A bipartisan, center-right approach should come easily to her. That's how she won her race for governor in 2006.

Yet the last thing the Republican Party needs right now is a look back at the tumult and drama of 2008. Just when the party is enjoying its first good news in five years, here comes Sarah Palin. The next week is going to be about her and how she views the world. And it's not the image some in the Republican Party would like to broadcast, especially now when it appears they have an opportunity to slowly win back the trust of swing voters. At a minimum, Palin is a distraction for the GOP as it attempts to build on Election 2009 success. Worst case, she sets back efforts the party is making to appeal to swing voters again.

The controversy stems from a multiple-partner sex scene planned for tonight's episode of the soapy CW drama, which the network has been teasing on-air as "OM3," in keeping with its suggestive, text-speak marketing. The threesome involves major characters on the show, though their identities haven't been revealed.

As has happened oh, about a thousand times in recent TV history, (over)zealous promotion on a network's part built up a sweeps episode, which caused much ink and many pixels to be expended in anticipation of the allegedly life-altering event. Monday night's "Gossip Girl" had the added juice of the Parents Television Council frothing at the mouth over the episode before having seen it.

The pre-emptive campaign and threats of indecency fines didn't work -- no affiliates or advertisers bailed on Monday's episode. And while the PTC has never met a mildly salacious storyline it didn't love to hate, this one really ended up being a snoozer.

(I'm going to discuss what happened in that portion of the episode now, so if you haven't watched yet and don't want to know, now's the time to click away. Alternately, if you don't want to waste your time on a lame plot thread, please read on.)

Executive producers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage said they're exploring new territory this season because most of the characters have graduated from prep school and are now in college, where experimentation is common. However, they're still working with the heightened reality of the Upper East Side and its wealth and hedonism.

Schwartz promises more cutting-edge content for the second half of the season. "We're not going to pull back," he said. "If anything, we'll be accelerating because we've gotten our footing with these characters being out of high school. The PTC may be writing a lot of letters this year."

TV analysts don't think the sexual tripling, which also will be seen in flashback on the Nov. 16 episode, is much of a stretch. "This is the latest risqué plot twist in a program that's all about them," said John Rash, senior vice president/director of media analysis at ad agency Campbell Mithun.

The legendarily high-maintenance pop diva underwent a soup-to-nuts physical transformation, checking her glossy celebrity patina at the door to convincingly portray the film’s Ms. Weiss: a drab but deeply empathetic soul helping a troubled teenager in 1980s Harlem. Far from the image Carey has cultivated for years, the character has lank hair, a wardrobe of rayon sweater-coats and a sparse mustache across her upper lip.

Daniels, who became chummy with the singer after casting her in his indie drama “Tennessee,’’ implemented Carey’s deglamorization process to ensure that audiences wouldn’t be “taken out of the picture by seeing Mariah Carey,’’ and also to antagonize the singer for her own good by making her look homely.

“It wasn’t just the director in me,’’ Daniels explained earlier this week, “but the big brother torturing his sister. This was just to irritate her. At what point would she start screaming and run up out of this chair?’’

To put a fine point on how unlikely all of this is, one need look no further than Carey’s 2001 star vehicle “Glitter.’’ The movie was trounced by critics, fizzled at the box office, and netted the performer a Razzie Award for worst actress.

London (ANI): Actress Jennifer Hudson has said that she still feels her mother's presence, who was killed in a shootout last year. The ‘Dreamgirls’ star insisted that her mom Darnell was like a guardian angel guiding her.

On being asked if she felt her mother’s presence, she replied: "Oh my God, yeah. Definitely. Wherever. “Every day I'm like, ''Wow! I didn't realise I was so like my mother until now'', you know? She was the strongest person, woman, I've ever seen, you know?" Hudson had been devastated when her mother and her brother were found dead at their Chicago home in October last year.

On Oct. 24, 2008, Hudson's mother and brother were found shot to death in their Englewood home, and her 7-year-old nephew was found dead of gunshot wounds three days later. Hudson's estranged brother-in-law, William Balfour, has been charged with the murders.

The Oscar and Grammy winner also said she wants more children.

"I'd like to have at least one more, a little girl," she said.

"I want a girl and then maybe another one. You know, one baby at a time."

Next month, Hudson's holiday special, "I'll Be Home for Christmas," will air on ABC and feature locations from Hudson's childhood.

"I am strong" were the first words out of Rihanna's mouth in her short interview with Diane Sawyer on ABCs "Good Morning America."

She made the claim unequivocally glint of anger in here eye. It was a sign that this carefully managed encounter...part of a media flurry in which the Barbadian pop star and her ex-boyfriend, Chris Brown, try to manage the fallout from Brown's February assault on her as they prepare to release new albums....would be heavy on message, and less so on confessions. In her first major television interview after the assault, Rihanna clearly meant to reclaim her position as a worthy role model for young woman.

But a troubled relationship may stand in her way. Not the one with Brown, which is apparently 100% kaput, though she admitted to returning to him a few weeks after the beating. The bond Rihanna believes she endangered by returning to Brown is the one with he fans.

If Rihanna’s career has been about noir, “Russian Roulette” is the moment in the novel where someone finally pulls a gun from a trench coat and changes everything. Lyrics like “I’m terrified but I’m not leaving / I know that I must pass this test” and “It’s too late to pick up the value of my life” pointedly allude to that event and a very bleak set of emotions accompanying it. Yet Rihanna purposefully avoids any hard statements about how (or if) the song relates to what she knows we’re all thinking. For music fans more accustomed to the upbeat revenge ballads of the Dixie Chicks or the stay-strong resilience of Mary J. Blige, Rihanna’s choice of metaphor in this song -- that she’s powerless before fate in a game of roulette for her life -- will come as a shock and, understandably, perhaps a disappointment to fans hoping for something more reassuring.

Yet there are so many reads to this strange, oblique song that you can’t just walk away from it with a perfunctory sadness or tsk-tsking that she should set a better example. Is there any power in Rihanna’s choosing, of her own volition, to play this violent game of chance? Is she talking about her career -- that the correct next move for her feels entirely unknowable after a night like that? Is this just a well-timed dramatic sliver of the many complicated emotions surrounding her assault, one that could make other victims feel heartened that they aren’t alone in such contradictory thoughts?

Sony was forced to pick the date for "This Is It" because it wanted to rush the film out this fall and every other weekend was crowded with major new releases.

Apparition's "The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day" started with a decent $461,614 at 68 locations. That's more than 15 times the ticket sales for the ultra-violent original, an infamous flop in 2000 that found renewed life on DVD.

Last week brought the video for Adam Lambert's "Time for Miracles," which features the "American Idol" runner-up crooning in the midst of an apocalypse (the song is on the sound track for upcoming end-of-the-world-as-we-know-it flick "2012").

This week, we can see where Lambert landed after the mayhem and destruction - in his own distant and peculiar galaxy, circa 1983.

The cover art for his new album, "For Your Entertainment," features the singer at his glammy best, but with a distinctly retro look to all that eye shadow and feathers. His look seems to be the love child of a 3-way tryst between Boy George, Adam Ant, and Ziggy Stardust, with a little Michael Jackson thrown in (the glove).

The cover has been unveiled on the internet for 'American Idol' runner-up Adam Lambert's debut album "For Your Entertainment", which will hit stores on November 23.

MTV's website describes the outer space-tinged cover photo shoot "as spectacularly over-the-top and jaw-dropping as [Lambert's] memorable American Idol performances.".

But in contrast to the mainstream reaction to the glam-style singer's cover artwork, Lambert's fans have posted positive comments about it on his official website.

As much as Patrick Swayze's death hurt his fans, the pain was infinitely worse for Lisa Niemi, his wife of 34 years.

"I am so grateful for what I had and my connection to him, and part of me believes that I will see him again, and I'm just going to have to go on until then," said the actor's widow Tuesday during the "Grief, Healing and Resilience" talk at Women's Conference 2009 in Long Beach.

The roundtable discussion took place in front of about 14,000 people and was moderated by California first lady Maria Shriver. Kelly Preston had originally been scheduled to take part, but she later canceled, saying it was too soon to discuss her son Jett's death in January.

Recalling how she told Swayze she loved him over and over in the weeks before his death, Niemi said that she still worried it wasn't enough.

"I've spent two thirds of my life with him," she said. "My regret is that I didn't tell him that I loved him enough over that entire 34 years."

Niemi helped Swayze pen the memoir The Time of My Life during those final months. The couple didn't have any children but counted the horses and dogs on their New Mexico ranch among the closest members of their family.

Loss is like "an animal all its own," Niemi said today.

"When the grief takes you, it's like your body is not your own. I'm just going with the flow. I know I have to go through it."

The following exchange took place during Pam Oliver's interview with Derek Fisher following Utah’s series-clinching Game 5 win over Golden State on Tuesday night:Oliver: “I’m looking at the confetti falling down. It’s a pitiful display. The confetti guy might need to get fired, but it’s still a great moment, isn’t it?”Fisher: “Yeah, this organization has been such a classy and winning organization for such a long time. Been down for a few years, so whatever they want to do, you know, let’s enjoy it, it’s just a great moment.”
There are a couple of great things about this dialogue (aside from the fact that it involves a sideline reporter invoking the rare technique of attempting to completely destroy the moment before asking a question about what a great moment it is):First of all, Oliver's comments call to mind an image of the crazed, toothless and embittered “Confetti Guy” who, unbeknownst to everyone until right now, lurks in the bowels of the Delta Center (or whatever the hell they call it these days) and from this moment forth will spend every waking moment of his dark days plotting revenge on the woman who called his life's work "pitiful."

The late music legend bought the luxury estate – a 155-acre property near Memphis, Tennessee - in 1968 to share with his new wife Priscilla. Known by fans as the ‘Elvis Ranch’, the rock ‘n’ roll star owned the Circle G estate in Lake Horn from 1966 to 1971.
Estate agent Rodger Motz expects the ranch to be snapped up by a fan and has already had one interested buyer contact him from Denmark.

(CNN) -- After a weekend of rumors, it's finally official: Heidi Klum and Seal are now the proud parents of a baby girl, Klum's representative confirmed.
Heidi Klum recently applied to change her last name to Seal's surname of Samuel. She and the singer ("Kiss From a Rose")
The "Project Runway" host gave birth Friday night. Klum and Seal named their new bundle Lou Sulola Samuel.
The couple, who married in 2005, have been busy babymaking ever since. Lou Sulola is the youngest of four: Henri, 4, Johan, 2 and Leni, 5, whom Klum had from a previous relationship.
"It's difficult to imagine loving another child as much as you love your existing children," Seal said of the birth in a statement Tuesday. "Anyone who has a family will tell you this. Where will one find that extra love? If you love your existing children with all of your heart, how then can one possibly find more heart with which to love another?

You know it's going to be a good interview when "Couples Retreat" star Malin Akerman starts off by saying, "Time to unwind, undress and get skinny-dipping!"
Coolest woman ever? Probably. Mind you, her call to party wasn't completely out of context. MTV News had traveled quite a ways to hang out with Akerman and her co-stars Vince Vaughn, Jason Bateman, Kristen Bell, Kristin Davis and Jon Favreau. On this particular day in paradise, Akerman decided to mix up some cocktails in the midst of an interview — what she dubbed a Bora Bora margarita: pineapple nectar subbing in for lime juice.
And sure enough, while co-starring as Vince Vaughn's wife in Couples Retreat, it didn't take long before she spotted the sparks flying between Vaughn and his old Swingers cohort Jon Favreau.
"In track and field, you never put in people slower next to you -- you always put in people faster. The reasoning behind that is that you then challenge yourself to be faster. It was same on the set with Vince and Jon -- it was a big challenge to keep up. It wasn't easy. They know how to play off each other because they've been doing it so long," says Akerman, whose comedic credits include The Heartbreak Kid, 27 Dresses and The Proposal. We disagree, Vince! How else would we learn, as you confessed with a laugh at one point, that your vacation of choice is not on a tropical island but somewhere you can "be in full chaps doing a cattle drive"? As the booze flowed, the hilarity ensued. When it came to substantive answers, though, we'd probably have to rely on earlier, alcohol-free interviews, when we hit up Akerman, Vaughn and the rest of the cast with pop-quizzes about another. After all, they'd spent a couple months hanging out together, making this film about couples who head to an idyllic setting for vacation and end up in the midst of no-holds-bared relationship therapy. How much do they really know about their fellow stars?
